How Does the March 22/17 Budget Impact GSSD?

GSSD received its’ 2017-2018 Budget Day Information Package yesterday, March 22nd after attending the pre-Budget announcement in Regina.

    • Our recognized funding amount for September 1, 2017 through to August 31, 2018 is $69,966,168. This is a decrease of 3.15% ($2,275,872) from our current year, which was $72,242,040.

    Key facts:

    • The funding allocations are based on projected enrolments and will be adjusted, up or down, once actual enrolments are known in the fall.
    • The funding includes the final recommendations from the Funding Model Review Committee, which was chaired by Dan Perrins.
    • New condition terms have been applied to the amount that can be allocated to governance spending, school community council allowance and funding provided for minor renovations. These are in addition to the conditional funding for pre-kindergarten programs.
    •  School Divisions are being asked to help meet the challenges of controlling spending including the Provincial Compensation Target of 3.5%.
    • Preventative Maintenance and Repair funding increased by 13.9% to $1,673,360
    •  Columbia School will receive two Relocatable Classrooms.
    • There will be increased financial reporting to the Government. Currently only the budget and financial statements are submitted.
    • Additional expenses that will need to be incorporated in the budget planning are staff increments, increases to PST, Municipal Employee Pension Plan (MEPP) contributions, Workers’ Compensation premiums.

Board Chairs, Directors and CFO’s met with Deputy Minister MacRae and Ministry staff to receive additional information regarding the 2017-2018 budget and the Governance Review on Friday, March 24th. Following that, work will begin to plan for the next year. Over the next few months, Administration will be working with representative groups to discuss options to achieve a balanced budget. Final Board budgets are due to the Ministry by June 30th.
