Commitment to Excellence and Accountability

Administrative Procedure 151 Parent and Public Inquiries

At the Good Spirit School Division, we take great pride in providing education and employment in the Parkland region. With over 840 full-time staff across 29 locations—27 schools and two service centers—in 15 communities, we are a major employer and generator of economic activity in the area.

Our team is dedicated to the wellbeing, safety, and education of over 6,300 students, delivering not just the provincial curriculum but also offering mentorship, supervision, and genuine care. We live by our motto, "Students Come First," striving every day to acknowledge and address the individual needs of each student.

With this dedication, there are times when issues arise and/or mistakes are made , whether intentional or not. It's crucial for our community to know that GSSD has in place a fair and thorough process for investigating (if necessary) and addressing such issues -

We also have a progressive discipline system in place, where the severity of the consequences intensifies based on the nature of the infraction. Our goal is to correct behavior, not merely to punish. All disciplinary actions involving our staff also requires collaboration with the respective unions or labour groups, and for teachers, coordination with the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation (STF) is essential. GSSD strictly adheres to labor laws, privacy laws, and our duty for fair representation.

For example, disciplinary actions for employees can range from verbal warnings, suspensions without pay, to termination, depending on the severity of the case or issue. These actions are part of a detailed process that includes opportunities for the employee to appeal through grievance procedures, show-cause hearings before the Board of Education, or arbitration before a Board of Reference. Decisions may also be defended before bodies like the Labour Board of Saskatchewan or the Court of King's Bench. For teachers, issues can be reported to the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board (SPTRB) for further investigation.

It is through these important and established processes that GSSD maintains our commitment to accountability and high-quality service for our students, staff, families and community. We are dedicated to putting our students first with transparency and fairness in all our practices, while also respecting that circumstances or information related to a student, staff (personnel) and human resource matters cannot be shared or discussed due to privacy.
